Mary Lake Polan, M.D., is chair emeritus of the department of gynecology and obstetrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is also an adjunct professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive sciences at Columbia University School of Medicine.

Polan specializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She has published more than 150 articles, chapters, and books of research in this field. She has served on numerous medical and health committees, including the Council of the Institute of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the American Medical Women's Association. She is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of many professional societies. She was also a member of the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Polan received her bachelor's degree from Connecticut College. She earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and M.D. from Yale University and completed her residency and reproductive endocrine fellowship in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale University School of Medicine. She received her M.P.H. from the Maternal and Child Health Program of the University of California, Berkeley.
